If you have ever considered taking scuba diving classes but are being held back by a fear of water, rest assured this is normal.  Man was not made to live in water, and that is’s precisely why we need all that scuba gear just to stay submerged for anything longer than a few minutes.  It is healthy to be fearful because it will make you a careful scuba diver, but it should not hold you back from enjoying one of the most delightful and satisfying activities you can experience.  This article should start you off with some simple exercises built to temper that fear and make you more comfortable out there in your newfound underwater world.

We spend our lives respiring thru our noses, so it should come as no surprise that many people find it tricky or unnatural to breathe absolutely through the mouth, at least at first.  A good dive mask will stop you from respiring thru your nose the majority of the time, but a flooded mask is a common occurrence in normal diving and you should be in a position to breathe through the mouth ( shutting off nasal respiring utterly ) without unjustified effort.  A good way to enhance this talent is by swimming “freestyle.” This common style of swimming makes use of mouth breathing, inhaling when the face is hardly out of the water and breathing out a split 2nd later when the face is submerged.  Powerful freestyle swimming also makes you familiar with the feeling of getting a little water in your nose without panicking, and naturally it is very good all-around exercise.

An alternative mouth-breathing exercise is breathing through a snorkel with your face underwater.  Stand in an area of the pool where the water is chest deep.  Wear eye spectacles rather than a mask so that your nose is exposed to the water ( otherwise, since you are not going to swim, you can abstain from the glasses and just hold the snorkel tube to the side of your head where it’ll normally be attached to the mask strap ).  Submerge your face in the water and breathe through the snorkel without pinching your nose with your fingers.

Another exercise involving your snorkel, as well as a mask and 2 fins, will build confidence in your ability to perform important and potentially life-preserving maneuvers underwater.  Note that this exercise is potentially dangerous so be sure that all guarantees are in place before attempting this.  Do it in a pool with a buddy and a lifeguard present.  In part of the pool where the water is about a foot or 2 deeper than you are tall, throw in your mask, snorkel and fins.  Stop breathing, jump in, and recover the items, putting on the mask and clearing it, putting the fins correctly on your feet, and then clearing the snorkel as you rise slowly, looking up and making sure that there are no obstructions above you.  It’d take one or two tries before you’re able to finish it, but with persistence, you will.  The trick is to chill and take it slowly so that the air in your lungs will last longer.  Amateurs will customarily try and hurry up, making them fumble and panic when they start running out of air.
